The Union Grove High School girls basketball team ended the regular season at home with an easy 49-30 win over Southern Lakes Conference foe Delavan-Darien Feb. 21.
The win pushed Union Grove to .500 in the SLC for at 7-7. The girls are 9-13 overall. The win was also Domagalski’s 201st as head coach at UGHS. He had gotten his 200th win Feb. 12 in a victory over Burlington.
Head coach Rob Domagalski noted that this is the 13th consecutive season that the Bronco girls have finished at .500 or better in the SLC.
“We’re always competitive in our conference,” he said. “There is no other team in our conference that can say that.”
The Bronco girls jumped out to an 11-2 lead after one quarter and maintained that nine-point lead at the half, 28-19.
Domagalski noted that the Comets scored 17 points in the second quarter, and only 13 points in the other three quarters combined.
“We gave them buckets (in the second quarter) they didn’t have to work for,” Domagalski said.
An 11-4 margin in the third quarter allowed Union Grove to build its lead to 16 points – 39-23 – going into the final eight minutes.
“We’re playing good defense, but I think we can play better,” Domagalski said.
The Comets Amanda McLernon led all scorers with 16 points, but the Broncos had two players in double figures and four players with eight points or more.
Becca Maier led Union Grove with 13 points, with Frankie Pettit adding 12.
Both teams were 11 for 16 from the free-throw line.
Overall, Domagalski is pleased with the progress of his young squad this season.
“I think as a team we’re getting better,” he said. “Our youth is getting more experience.”
The opening postseason game at Elkhorn scheduled for Tuesday was postponed until Wednesday due to weather.
Senior forward Sarah Petrovic will need only eight rebounds in that game to tie the single season record at UGHS for rebounds, and nine to break the record. She has been averaging 11 rebounds per game.
The team will also have sophomore guard Jordan Weidner back for this game. Weidner had been out for several games with a concussion.
