The Union Grove High School boys basketball team began Southern Lakes Conference Tuesday when they hosted Delavan-Darien. The Broncos dominated the matcup, coming away with a 74-37 win on their home court.
The Bronco boys got off to a slow start and trailed the Comets 16-8 after one quarter. But after that it was all Union Grove.
The Broncos outscored Delavan-Darien 22-4 in the second quarter to take a 10-point halftime lead, 30-20. The boys then proceeded to outscore the Comets 18-7 in the third quarter and 26-10 in the final period to run away with the victory.
Union Grove had four players in double figures, led by Cody Walter with 16. Jake Fink added 13, and Alex Hale and Andrew Kazikowski had 10 apiece
By making nine of 14 foul shots in the final quarter, the Broncos finished the game sinking 18 of 25.
The win evened Union Grove’s season record at 3-3, and gave them a 1-0 mark in the SLC.
In a non-conference matchup, the Bronco boys were unable to overcome an 18-10 third-quarter deficit in a 63-58 loss at The Prairie School.
The two teams were tied 12-12 after one quarter, and Union Grove took a six-point lead early in the second. That dwindled, though to a slim 27-26 lead at the half.
The 18-10 margin in The Prairie School’s favor in the third quarter put Union Grove in a 44-37 hole the boys were unable to make up even with a 21-19 advantage in the final period.
“We took some quick shots (in the third quarter) that weren’t of high quality and missed them,” head coach David Pettit said.
Prairie took advantage by knocking down back-to-back threes and the Broncos never recovered. The closest Union Grove got in the fourth quarter was four points.
The Bronco boys had three players in double figures, led by Alex Hale with 15. Kyle Pohjola and Cody Walters had 10 apiece, with Ben Miller adding nine.
Prairie had four players in double figures.
“We didn’t play very good defense,” Pettit said.
This game was decided at the free-throw line, with The Prairie School sinking 18 of 27, and Union Grove 8 of 13.
