Now is the time for potential candidates to step up for local councils, boards
The local election season kicks off this weekend as incumbents and potential challengers are able to officially declare candidacy or circulate nomination papers for the April election.
Locally the election encompasses the city, surrounding townships and the local school board.
Dec. 1 is the first day of the process. In most cases potential candidates have until Jan. 2 to file their paperwork. The spring election is scheduled for April 2. If more than two candidates emerge for a single position a primary election would be held Feb. 19.
Potential candidates should contact the clerk in their community or school district for additional information on the process.
Here is a listing of the local offices that will appear on the spring ballot:
City of Burlington
With the announcement last week that incumbent Alderman Steve Rauch won’t seek another term as the 3rd District representative, there will be at least one new face on the City Council.
In addition to Rauch’s seat, the 1st District seat held by Robert Prailes, the 2nd District seat held by Peter Hintz and the 4th District seat held by Katie Simenson will also appear on the ballot.
Each seat carries a two-year term.
Town of Burlington
The Town Board chairman seat currently held by Ralph Rice is one of three seats that appear on the spring ballot.
In addition, the Supervisor I seat held by Tyson Fettes and the Supervisor II seat held by Rick Isaacson are up for election.
All three seats come with two-year terms.
Two seats are up for election on the Burlington Area School District Board of Education. The seats carry three-year terms.
The current incumbents holding those seats are Larry Anderson and Scott Barrett.
Village of Rochester
The village president and three trustee positions will appear on the spring ballot.
Current incumbents in those seats are Village President Paul Beere and Trustees Gary Beck, Ed Chart and Mike Weinkauf.
All the terms are for two years.
Town of Spring Prairie
Three Town Board seats and the clerk/treasurer position will appear on the spring ballot.
Incumbents are Town Chairman Donald Henningfield, Supervisors Thomas Bolfert and Donald Trimberger and Clerk/Treasurer Debra Collins.
