Larry Stanley Smith, 64, died unexpectedly on Sept. 13, 2012, in Redwood City, Calif. He was born in Racine, raised in Union Grove, and graduated from the UW-Platteville with a Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering in 1971.
Following graduation he joined the U.S. Navy, where he served as a Lieutenant. During his five years of service he was stationed in Japan, Spain, and Barbados, West Indies where he met and married the former Susan Weatherhead. He was well respected by all.
Survivors include his wife; daughter, Ashley of Pleasant Hill, Calif., and son, James of Tucson; sister, Sharon Tilton (Mike Vogt); and brother, James (Adele); two sisters-in law, Nancy Weatherhead and Sally Weatherhead, both of Racine; brother-in-law, Stephen in Canada; nieces; nephews; an aunt; cousins; special friend, Bill Taylor; and many other professional and personal friends, including Copper, his daily walking partner.
He was preceded in death by his eldest son, Douglas; parents, James G. and Ruth Smith; and grandparents.
He will forever be remembered as a loving husband, amazing father, caring brother, die-hard Packer fan, passionate outdoorsman, and a great friend to all who knew him.
A memorial service for Larry and his son, Douglas, will be held Friday, Oct. 5, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 1610 Main St., Union Grove at 9 a.m. A burial service with full military honors will follow in the Chapel at Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery at 10 a.m.
